Goodbye Juan Pierre

Contrary to many Dodger fans, I'm sorta sad to see JP go. Sure, he has a noodle arm and everyone took extra bases on him. Sure, he played above his head last season and made things exciting when we lost Manny. Sure his helmet looked ten sizes to big for him. Sure, he got caught stealing more than usual, but gosh darn it, I liked the guy. So goodbye and good luck Juan, we'll always have 2009 and I will always cherish my 'Pierresville' t-shirt. Thanks for the memories.

A Walk in the Park

There's noting more exciting than a walk off game winning hit. The Dodgers didn't get that last night. What they got was a bases loaded walk to push across a run and steal the game from Jake Peavy and the Padres. Peavy totally shut the Blue down through 8 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk. Young Dodger lefty Kershaw matched him pitch for pitch, allowing only 4 hits and 2 walks. Thus, it made for an old fashioned pitcher's duel at the Ravine. Something quite rare and far between these days. In the end, it turned out to be a one inning game and battle of the bullpens with the Dodgers coming out on top, 1-0. One base hit and three walks put the game on ice. Russell Martin who is hitting below the Mendoza line drew the walk-off walk. BTW, WTF is up with Russell? Any ideas? The Dodgers are off to their best start at 8-0 since the 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers.

Deja Vu

Been there, done that! The Dodgers over the Rockies, 6-5, once again. J-Mac wasn't sharp, but a 1st inning rally and key hits and four RBIs by J. Martin helped the Dodgers put down the Rockies for the 5th straight head to head game. Shout out to Troncoso who came away with a 12 out save. Nice work dude! It's exactly what the bullpen doctor ordered. The Blue go for the sweep this afternoon.

Unsung Heroes

It was not a stellar performance by Eric Stulz tonight. He zig-zagged his way through trouble throughout his six innings at Coors Field. Credit him for hanging in there and not letting the game get away. I don't know what it was about this particular game, but it was like watching paint dry. It dragged on and on and on. It was ugly. How many times could our bullpen give up a lead down the stretch? How many players were they going to strand? Answer: Many. However, when the smoke cleared, we were on top. We'll take the win, thank you very much. The Blue are 12-5 and in sole possession of 1st place.

Btw, have I mentioned I really really like our bench players? Brad Ausmus and Mark Loretta have come up huge for the Dodgers. Although they have had limited playing time, they're turning out to be clutch. Credit tonight's win to them for producing those crucial three runs. Oh and throw a little love Broxton's way. Me thinks Joe has a man-crush on that bad big boy! Either that or our bullpen blows right now, sans Broxy!Boo Yeah! Dodgers edge Rockies, 6-5.

The Red Hot Blue

That's right folks, a 10-3 record! Before I get to excited, yeah, I remember the 2005 start, when they went 12-2 and ended up in 4th place a gazillion games out. But this is not that team and Jim Tracy is not the manager. The 2009 team has a different hero every game, whether it's Manny finally busting out and smacking two bombs last Saturday or Andre Ethier smacking two of his own, tying him in the league for ribbies at 16. Or whether the following day, it's Matt Kemp jacking his two bombs, one of them a grand slam. And even the newest Dodger Orlando Hudson, who on Opening Day at the Ravine hit for the cycle, something which hadn't been done by a Dodger in 40 years. The little dude is spraying the ball all over the field, triples, doubles, singles, you name it. I think it's safe to say, the O-Dawg is taking full advantage of batting in front of Manny in the the lineup. Whatever the case, these Dodgers are hitting the snot out of the ball and I, for one, am in Blue Heaven.

The starting pitching and bullpen are holding up fine. Yes, shaky at times, but getting the job done. Chad Billingsley owns a 3-0 record, Jonathan Broxton has been lights out and the kid, Clayton Kershaw, is mowing down the opponents at an exceedingly high rate. Overall, the pitching has surpassed my expectations. I just hope they can keep this up.

And let's give a shout out to the bench players. If not for his dumbass slide into 2nd base last Thursday, that Meintnkieyegyruweiyurowicz guy looked pretty solid. It's really a shame he separated his shoulder and will be out for most of the season, if not all of it. Another positive sign is that in the first 13 games, the bench guys, Brad Ausmus, Mark Loretta, Juan Pierre, Juan Castro and Doug Mientkiewicz have already surpassed what Mark Sweeney did all of last year. Seriously, look it up. So, it seems the Dodger brass finally got the right pieces of the puzzle in place. Now let's see what the team does. I'm sure looking forward to it!

The Dodgers have a night off and then it's off to Houston for a 3 game series. Kershaw to pitch tomorrow.

On Jackie Rosbinson night at the Ravine, young Clayton Kershaw, pitched the game of his young life. He allowed one hit, while striking out 13 Gnats. Torre replaced Kershaw in the 8th and unfortunately for him, the bullpen blew his spectacular game by coughing up a three run homer to Aaron Rowand. Nevertheless, the Dodgers fought back by rallying in the bottom of the 8th tying the game at 4 all. They finally pulled the game out, with a bases loaded walk, edging the Gnats for a final of 5-4. Phew!.

Billz has a tremendous start, going a fantastic 7 innings, giving up one run, striking out 11.

Ethier supplied the power, knocking two home runs bombs, picking up 4 ribbies.

Newest Dodger, Orlando Hudson, supplied the electricity, hitting for the cycle in his first appearance in front of the home crowd. (Note: Last Dodger to hit for the cycle was Wes Parker in 1970).

No 1 Dodger, Vin Scully, was the honoree and threw out the first pitch. He has served 60 years as the voice of the Dodgers.

The Dodgers pounded the Gnats, 11-1!

Could not have asked for a better day!

Hungry Like the Wolf

Randy Wolf went a strong 7 plus innings before being lifted for a reliever. He gave up a couple hits and one run. The Dodger offense did not pick up where they left off yesterday, but nevertheless, got the job done. Thanks in part to a very strange play. Tony Jackson has a great recap for those of us still baffled by it.

In then end, Dodgers beat Dan Haren, 3-1, taking 2 of 3 from the Snakes. Broxton picked up his 3rd save and Matt Kemp is the only Dodger to have hit safely in the first seven games.

I'll be playing hooky in order to attend tomorrow's home opener against the Gnats.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

After what was an extremely slow start, the Dodgers finally picked up the pace. They were able to finish April over .500 by stringing together EIGHT wins, sweeping the Rockies, the Marlins, then Rockies, once again. For good measure, they followed up by taking two of three from the Mets.

During that stretch, the some good things happened and some, not so good. First the good. Rafael Furcal is on fire doing what every leadoff player needs to do. He's hitting the ball with authority, getting on base and scoring a ton of runs. Unfortunately, he's sat out the last few games due to a sore back. Please get better Raffy! After initially struggling at the plate, Russell Martin has lifted his average to a more reasonable .285. The Dodgers seem to go, the way Russ goes, so this is HUGE! Kuo has done a great job out coming out of the bullpen, cleaning up Blowizah's (Loaiza) messes. Seriously, this guy SUCKS! He can't do shit with a 6-10 lead. He needs to go! Oh, and let's not forget what Blake DeWitt has done. The newest 3rd baseman is only hitting a mere .315, has a couple of dingers (one, an inside the park) and 18 RBIs. Garciaparra who? Laroche who? This kid has been a Godsend! The Dodgers, who at one point were 9 games out of 1st have now moved up in the standings and are only 3.5 games behind the Diamondbacks. Sheesh, the D'backs have finally come down to Earth like the rest of the mortals. For awhile, I thought they'd never lose again!

Now the bad. Brad Penny and Derek Lowe have been stinking up the joint. Their ERAs have ballooned to 4.49 and 4.43, respectively. They simply are not getting the job done and have been hammered their last couple outings. Luckily, Billingsley and the Pen have stepped it up and have been bailing them out hot water. Honeycutt better find out what the frilly heck is going on with them and fix their problems asap! And Jones....I didn't think anyone could look this bad at the plate. So far the 38 million two year investment looks like a waste. I keep hoping he will come out of his slump, but the guy looks awful at the plate and has the BA to show for it. Dude isn't gonna get it done by hitting .174. In spite of him though, the Dodgers have been able to win, compete and make up some ground. I can only image how tough my boys would be if he started to swing the bat. Heck, at this point, I'd settle with a.250 average and an occasional RBI. Jones has 4! Ugh, it's been UGLY! Torre has been playing Juan Pierre, who has done a fantastic job, but really I hate seeing Ethier ride the pine for Jones!

Into the Light...

April has been pretty miserable for The Blue, hence the light posting. However, it seems they're finally showing signs of life. I think it's mostly due to this little dude!

Let's hope the Dodgers can finish up the month at .500, they're at 11-13, 6 games back of the Snakes who look as though they'll never lose another game this season.

Dodgers can't hit water falling out of a boat

At this point, I'd rather field the team above than the Dodgers.

Seriously, Dodger bats are cold, below zero cold. What little contact the hitters are actually making turn out to be harmless dribblers, fly outs or 'almost' out of the park shots. Almost doesn't count, damn it! Of course, Chase Field is a graveyard and some of those would've been out at Dodger Stadium, but it's no excuse. Did anyone notice how easily the D'Back's young players hit them out? Mark Reynolds anyone?I think his bomb off Loaiza last Monday still hasn't landed. This is so totally frustrating. Seems as though last year's problems have continued to haunt the Blue.

And our big offseason acquisition, Jones, can't buy a hit. He watches perfect strikes go by without lifting the bat off his shoulders. Then he swings and flails at terrible pitches out of the strike zone. Kemp's K's keep piling up, although he's showing signs of snapping out of his funk. Russell still hasn't quite gotten into any kind of groove. There have been no clutch hits and it's killing the Dodgers!

I had really hoped the defense was going shine and keep them in games. Instead, 8 games in, and there've been too many errors and blunders leading to too many unearned runs. Since the starting pitching hasn't exactly been 'lights out,' I had hoped the bullpen would've picked up the slack. Far from it. They've allowed opposing teams to break games wide open.

The Dodger offense needs a jump start, pronto! The Blue Crew are easily swept by the Diamondbacks. Blech!

Bring on the Madres!! Bring on Peavy! It can't get any worse! Oh yeah it can...we could be Detroit!

Loaiza Blows

First, the good news: The Dodgers took 2 of 3 from the Padres in Petco this past weekend!

Now, the bad news: LOAIZA BLOWS CHUNKS!! The chump gave up 4 to the Snakes in the first inning and put the game out of reach right out of the gate. Are we stuck with this clown for the season? Nice move Neddy Boy, this guy is nothing more than a batting practice pitcher! Here I thought Barry Zito was soft! Pffft! I want this guy bounced ASAP! Sheesh!

It never fails. Every season there always has to be a pain in my ass. Ugh!

Ku-Ro-Da, Ku-Ro-Da, Ku-Ro-Da!! Great MLB debut for Hiroki Kuroda who scattered three hits against the Padres tonight. Kuroda's strength is his control and mastery of the strike zone. He is very much like Takashi Saito, in that he throws strikes and a makes a minimal number of pitches. The Padre lineup looked completely overmatched. Kuroda did, however, make one mistake to Brian Giles who took him deep to left. No big, the Dodgers win at PetFood, 7-1. Perhaps another Dodger ROY in the making, hmm?

High five to Russ Martin, who finally got his first hit of the season after a slow 0-13 start. And what a hit it was. Russ' single broke a tie and gave the Blue a 3-1 lead over the Madres! Sweet!

On another note: The Madres' SS Khalil Greene reminds me of someone...who could that be?

Follies in the Rain

The Dodgers missed a grand opportunity to sweep the lowly Giants. Game three was to feature what would have been a great match up between Billingsley and Lincecum. However, the Rain Gods had other ideas. At the last minute, Torre decided to scratch Billingsley, so as not to "waste" a start. Following suit, Bochey did the same and scratched his starter. The game got underway, but there was a 77 minute rain delay mixed in! Let the weirdness begin!

Kuo took the mound for the Blue, while some skinny dude named, Merkin, started for the Gnats. Kuo was shaky through four innings, however, did not allow any runs. Merkin, on the other hand, was pretty solid for two innings. Then came Taschner/Troncoso, who were followed by the original starters, Lincecum/Billingsley. The protagonists were less than stellar, each giving up a run. So much for the managers trying to out maneuver each other.

Next up, Walker/Loiza entered. Ick! I do not care for Loiza one little bit. The dude throws big fat watermelons up there! I just know he's gonna be the Bomko for this team! As expected, Loiza gave up the go ahead run for the Gnats! It didn't much help that the Dodger defense was sorta pathetic. Furcal missed a sure DP ball, Ethier dropped a can of corn fly ball in left center field, while Jones watched. It was ugly.

The last set of pitchers were Wilson/Proctor and the Dodgers lost, 2-1. With one out in the bottom of the 9th, and Pierre at first, the game ended with a call strike three to Delwyn Young and Pierre getting caught at second trying to steal. It wasn't even close. Like I said, UGLY!

And what the heck is up with Russell? He is 0-11 in this young season. I have no doubt he'll turn it around, but he's gotta stop with the tantrums when he doesn't agree with the home plate ump. It doesn't become him. I sure hope the God-like status he's achieved in LA hasn't gone to his head!

One last note: It is me? Or does Lincecum remind anyone of Baby New Year?

AT LAST

FIELD OF DREAMS

It was a beautiful day. The Opening ceremonies were nice and it made some of the fans weepy with nostalgia. The Dodgers organized appearances from great Dodgers of the past. Among them, some of my favorites, such as, Garvey, Sax, Cey, Valenzuela, Yeager and company. The real crowd pleasers though, were real Old Timers, such as, Duke Snider, Wally Moon, Sweet Lou Johnson, Don Newcombe, Maury Wills, Sandy Koufax. Frank McCourt should give himself a nice pat on the back, it was a great gesture and a great way to honor our past heroes.

Opening Day has not been good for the Dodgers or the fans for the past six years. However, with today's 5-0 shutout win over the Gnats, it lifted their record to 2-5. I knew there was a good chance of turning things around when it was announced the Dodgers would be facing Barry Zito, who's fastball tops out at 83 MPH. Heck, my Grams throw harder than he does! In the first inning, the Dodgers jumped out to a quick lead. According to Vinnie, Zito tried to sneak a fastball past Kent. It didn't work. Here is the result!

The Dodgers displayed everything perfectly today. Pitching, defense and timely hitting. It was awesome to see what a healthy Furcal is capable of. I want to give a shoutout to Joe Torre for answering my prayers. His lineup was similar to what I'd asked for, he just mixed it up a little differently. ;-) Sweet!

This was one for the ages. The Coliseum. 115,000 fans. A sea of blue. Welcome to the kickoff celebration for the 50th Anniversary of the Dodgers in the City of Los Angeles.

The Dodgers lost, 7-4 to the Boston Red Sox. However, I don't really think the crowd cared too much. Apart from the hassle of trying to get in and out of the Coliseum, I think fun was had by all. Me, I can't believe there weren't more homeruns (4) to left field...it was within spitting distance!

Odd Man Out

ANDRE ETHIER

JUAN PIERRE

I like Juan Pierre, I really do. Although he started out weakly last season, hitting and fielding, he did end with 64 stolen bases for the Blue. He pretty much performed exactly how Dodger management thought he would. However, I've always been a huge Andre Ethier fan. The Dodgers picked him up for a song a few seasons ago from the Oakland A's. This kid is bursting with talent. I honestly believe he can be a 25/.300/100 type hitter given a full opportunity in left field.

The Dodgers have one extra outfielder with Kemp and Jones. There will be an odd man out. Juan Pierre is already making noise about the possibility of sharing duties. I don't blame the guy, everyone wants to start. Personally, I'd rather see the best man in the lineup. Unfortunately sometimes salary comes into play when making decisions. The Dodgers overpaid Juan and are stuck. There aren't any teams interested in picking up the high price tag associated with him. What a conundrum for Joe Torre. If I could whisper in his ear, I'd tell him Andre is the man, go with him! We'll see come Opening Day....

Goodbye Forever!

On March 17th, sad goodbyes were said to what has been the Spring home for Los Angeles Dodgers for the the past 60 years. Lasorda probably has tons of great memories there. It is rich with history and Dodger tradition. You could see the tears well up in Tommy's eyes, as he walked off the field, for what could be the last time. I'm sorta bummed I never got the chance to make it out to Vero Beach, Florida! That had always been a dream of mine! Bleh!

On a bright note, the new Dodger Spring home will be in Glendale, Arizona, beginning in 2009. It's just a hop skip and a jump from Los Angeles. Better still, I've got two sisters who live in the area! Woo Hoo! Glendale, here I come!!

Sup with Tommy?

Tommy's return to the Dodger helm has been less than triumphant. He's 0-4, since Torre left him in charge of the club earlier this week. Although I love his enthusiasm and Spring training games don't mean much, I'm quite okay with this. On his first day out as manager, feisty 80 year old Tommy, tried his darndest to get he boot. True to form, and ever the showman, he put on a show for the fans, arguing with an ump over a bunt out by James Loney. Some things never change. LOL!!!

Tonight at 10p.m., the Dodgers will face the San Diego Padres in an exhibition game live from Bejing, China. Frankly, I'm hoping for a smackdown of the Pads. I'm sick to death of losing to the them for the past few years! This has got to change....NOW!

Pitchers and Catchers Report to Vero

Coletti and McCourt have been busy little bees. They managed to clean house and were able rid themselves of many over-the-hill, useless players/managers who were virtually albatrosses last season. Among them were, manager, Grady Little, left fielder Luis Gonzalez; pitchers Mark Hendrickson, Brett Tomko, Roberto Hernandez, Chin-hui Tsao, David Wells, Randy Wolf; catcher Mike Lieberthal; first basemen Olmedo Saenz, Shea Hillenbrand. The only ones who contributed anything to the club were Gonzalez and Wells. Of course, Wells came on late in the season and picked up a few wins. However, if I never see any of the aforementioned players in a Dodgers' uniform again, it will be too soon! Sayonara!!!

Among new faces in Vero Beach, Florida, this Spring will be newly signed Japanese pitcher, Hiroki Kuroda and ex-Brave, Andruw Jones. It's been years since I've felt any true excitement for my team. Sure, like any loyal fan, I begin every season by deluding myself into thinking my team will go all the way, only to face reality half way through the season. This year is different. This team has the very real potential to be a contender. The Dodgers finally have a big power bat, Martin has come into his own, Furcal is healthy, the pitching staff and bullpen look solid, Kemp and Loney, proved they belonged and the bench is pretty strong.

I do, however, have a few concerns. First, can Jason Schmidt make a comeback and regain his velocity? Second, should Ethier or Pierre get the nod in left? Finally, does Nomar have enough in the tank for one more solid season or should they go with the kid, Laroche? Hopefully these questions will be answered in Spring Training.

Most Dodger fans likely suspected Eric Gagne of dabbling in steroids, but like me, decided to turn a blind eye. What Eric was accomplishing on the field was incredible and we were loving every moment of it. After many years of mediocre Dodger ball clubs, we needed something to cheer about. Eric Game Over Gagne was it. I can't say I'm shocked while reading the Mitchell Report, but I am saddened to know my suspicions were correct. I've made so many posts about Barriods and his use of steroids, while giving Eric a pass. Well, no longer. If Bonds's home run record deserves as asterisk, so does Gagne's consecutive save record. Boo on you Eric, and shame on us!

Gagne wasn't a surprise, but the role Paul LoDuca played in this disaster was far worse. He peddled the stuff. He sent his teammates to the dealer. He was the "go to" guy, if someone wanted them! Paul is nothing better than a steroids pimp.

I'm not even gonna get into the list of players named. Too many. Some have already been accused or have been suspect. Check out the report in the above link....it reads like a bloody soap opera. *sigh*

The only silverlining is that there are no current Dodgers named in the report.

I'm excited about Andruw!! Can't wait to see him in Dodger Blue. Sure his BA stunk last season, but he still managed to out produce every single Dodger. 10 Gold Gloves ain't bad too shabby either! The best part is that he is a bona fide Madres killer! Petco is his launching pad! WooHoo! Adding him to the lineup, just makes it all the more solid. No holes as far as I can see. Of course, that's if Kent comes back.

Joe Torre has work to do, in the meantime, I'd like to submit my ideal lineup for 2008:

I like Juan Pierre. He's exciting to watch on the base paths, but there's just no room for him. We've got Raffy in leadoff, he'll be healthy come April. Perhaps the Dodgers can move Pierre or he can be the 4th outfielder. I doubt he'd accept that role and I wouldn't blame him if he didn't. He has some sort of streak going in regards to appearances in games. I'd like to see him do well...just somewhere else. With Jones, the Dodgers have strengthened their outfield. Ethier/Jones/Kemp all have above average arms, so we won't be seeing runners tagging and running wild on the bases. THAT SHIT ENDS! Pierre and Gonzo scared no one with their noodle arms and watching runners tag on balls hit to shallow left and center made me insane!

3B is up in the air. Nomar's power numbers disappeared last season. He's always been a great hitter, so hopefully he has something left in the tank and can win another "Comeback Player" award If that doesn't happen, I'd like to see what Andy Laroche is capable of. He's a hell of a defensive third baseman, but hasn't really done much with the bat. So let Nomar and Andy fight for the position in Spring training. May the best man win! *Come on Nomar, give me one more good year, Baby!*

Seems everyone's favorite player is in hot water again. Can't really say I'm surprised. Lies have a way biting us in the ass. Barroids has been indicted on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. The maximum jail time Bonds could face is up to 30 years. I sincerely doubt he'll serve any time. His team of lawyers will no doubt come up with an effective defense in order to spare Barry jail time. When it comes to entertainers, sports figures and millionaires, buying your freedom is as easy as 1-2-3, no matter the guilt...i.e., Simpson, Jackson, Bryant, Blake, to name a few.

As a Giants Hater, this may sound like treason, but I really think baseball and the Feds are scapegoating Barriods. Sure, I dislike the dude immensely, however, there are many other ballplayers who have not only perjured themselves, but also tested positive for steroids, which is something they have not been able to bust Bonds for.

Seriously, it's Christmas in October in Dodgerland!! Gump is out and Joe Torre is in as the new and IMPROVED Dodger manager. Trust me, anyone is an upgrade over Grady Little. Dude pissed me off way too much throughout 2007.

Presently, the Dodgers are trying to workout the details of Torre's contract. It looks as though it will be a three year deal for $12 million or so. What makes things interesting is that Torre could be bringing Don Mattingly as one of his coaches, along with the possibility of ARod landing in Los Angeles...and no, I don't mean the friggen Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim!!

I realize the Dodgers signing ARod is viewed as a longshot by some experts. Mostly because of the money and length of the contract he will be seeking. However, I love entertaining the idea of Alex Rodriguez in Dodger Blue! Woot! A girl can dream, can't she?

Suddenly, I can't wait for Opening Day!! Stay tuned...this offseason is getting good......in the meantime, have a safe and Happy Halloween!

Time Running Out?

I'm baaaack! Besides having gone on vacation for a week, I decided to stay away from blogging for a bit. Mostly because the Dodgers were driving me insane and I had nothing positive to say! What made me most ballistic was Grady Little's insistence on trotting out Brett Tomko to the mound for a weekly pounding for most of the season. A start by Bomko equaled a sure fire loss.

I was in New York when I heard the news that Brett had finally been DFA'd. I just about fell to my knees from sheer joy and relief! Bomko's final stats were a sickening 2-11 and a 5.30 ERA. Seriously, anyone with numbers such as those would likely get kicked off a little league team. Why the Dodgers waited so long, I will never understand?! No use crying over spilled milk. Let's move on.

Since Brett's no longer on the club, what did the Dodgers do, you ask? They signed 44 year old lefty David Wells, who had also been DFA'd earlier by the San Diego Padres. Then they went out picked up Estaban Loiza off waivers from Oakland. Up until now, both moves have paid off. Wells has had two quality starts and just today, Loiza beat Carlos Zambrano. He held the free swinging Cubbies to 3 runs as the Dodgers scored 11 runs. Wow!

The Dodgers seem to be picking up steam. They are 3 games back of the wildcard spot and 4 from first place. Unfortunately, time us running out. There are only 25 games left in the season and IMO, they'd have to go 20-5 to come out on top. Either that or pray that the D'Backs and/or the Padres fold like a cheap suit. I'll pray a rosary every night if that's what it'll take!

Loving the Dodgers has never been easy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Perhaps they could catch fire like the Cardinals did last season and go all the way. Who knows?? Whatever happens, I can guarantee it will be dramatic. The Dodgers never seem to do anything the easy way!

As I mentioned earlier, I vacationed in New York. While there, I had the opportunity to catch the Dodgers at Shea Stadium on August 26 for David Wells' debut. Baseball in NY is quite the experience....all the way from the subway ride to the crotchity old man behind the counter selling Mets merchandise. Lord have mercy! Rude, rude, rude! I'll try to blog and get some pictures up soon.

Okay, that's it! I've had it! 7-19 in the last 26 games! UNACCEPTABLE! This Dodger team is dead to me! Well no, not really, although, they may as well be. I just don't see them crawling out of the deep pile of shit they've dug for themselves. Two weeks ago, they were riding high, in first place with a decent win-loss record. Today, they are 6-1/2 games out of first, one game above .500, with zero hope in sight. Their bats are colder than an a witch's tit! Global warming, my ass...the Dodger dugout is the fucking artic zone! Brrrrrr!!

Still, imagine how much worse the season could've gone without Penny and an occassional good start from Billingsley and Lowe. Besides them, up to this point, Dodger starting pitching has been craptific. It's a shame they never had a healthy Schmidt to count on and of course, losing Randy Wolf at the all star break really hurt the team's chances. Due to the bad luck, management has been forced to use a couple of bums every few days as filler. And, of course, torture us fans in the process! My God, Tomko, aka "BOMKO" and Hendrickson, aka "Lurch" SUCK royal a$$!! I get physically ill on the days when I know they'll be on the mound. My butt doesn't even get the chance to warm my seat when we're already down by three or four runs! Management, please do us all a favor and lose these two! My grandma could pitch better and throw harder!

Pitching aside, what's even more frustrating is their hitting, or in this case, lack thereof. I've never seen a more impotent Dodger team. Is there any Viagra in the house? Sure, they get runners on, but they just can't get them to cross the God damned mother -bleep- plate. The team LOB must be somewhere up in the gazilions! Their collective BA has probably dropped by .50 points, if not more in the past couple of weeks. But wait, it's worse...much worse.

I wouldn't mind them losing so much, if they'd only show a little passion for the game. Yes, the players show up for games physically, but they always forget to bring their hearts with them. I like to see players who will leave it all out on the field and so far, it has not been the case. They're dull, lifeless and seem to have taken on Grady Gump's characteristics, which is like fucking Droopy. "I'm happy, are you happy?" No, I'm certainly the fuck NOT!! I'm sick of the Gumpage! Where the fuck is my team? Where are the bats, where are runs, where's the starting pitching, where's the passion, where's the heart? WHERE IS THE DODGER PRIDE?? WTF???????????????

Dodger faithful, please pray for this team, otherwise, the season is over today!

What in Heaven's name goes through Grady Gump's mind? Yes, that is his new nickname, it fits perfectly! Did anyone see his pathetic lineup for tonight's game against the D'Backs??? SAENZ HITTING CLEANUP??? God almighty, the guy is hitting a pathetic .185. Even lower now with an 0-4 night. Good call Gump! That ain't all folks, he also decided to start a journeyman utility guy, Ramon Martinez, at second base who is hitting even less than Saenz. And to put the icing on the cake, he started a recent call up and rookie, Delwyn Young, in left field. Nice way to get his feet wet, I guess. BUT DOES GUMP HAVE TO DO THIS WHEN THE DODGERS ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A DOGFIGHT FOR FIRST PLACE????????

I'm at a loss here. The Dodgers drop 2 of 3 to the lowly Gnats, they drop the first one to the D'Backs. They get shutout on 3 miserable hits and lose 1-0. You just knew it would happen. It was inevitable in a way: Barry Bonds coming to town with the possibility of tying and/or surpassing Hank Aaron's hallowed homerun record of 755. There is no one man hated more by Dodger fans than San Francisco's Barry Bonds.

What will Dodger fans do? How will they react should this horror happen at Dodger Stadium? I know one thing, I don't want the city of Los Angeles disgraced by unruly fans with the world looking on. Please, no throwing things, no fans running onto the field, no banners with obscenities, etc...

My first wish is for Barriods to have decency the stay out of the lineup for the entire series. However, since the man has no shame, it is highly unlikely. My second wish is that the entire Dodgers pitching staff receive orders to pitch around Bonds, every single at bat. Why even give him the opportunity? My third wish, is for all fans to remain silent in protestation of a tainted record. That or begin a chant of HEN-RY HEN-RY HEN-RY!

I went to the brawl, uh...I mean, game tonight. It was one of the weirder ballgames I've ever witnessed. How the hell does a team who mashes out 19 hits, lose? Leave it to my Boys in Blue to find a way.

Any kind of pitching whatsoever by Derek Lowe or for that matter, the rest of the bullpen (Houlton, Seanez and Hendrickson) would've most likely put the Dodgers in a position to win the game.

I'm officially beginning to worry about the state of our pitching. We lost Jason Schmidt for the season, Randy Wolf is still on the DL and we've been forced to trudge out Tomko and Hendrickson for spot starts. That leaves Brad Penny, who has been nothing short of awesome, Derek Lowe who has been the victim of no run support and Chad Billingsley who is like Dr. Jeykl and Hyde, never know which one will show up. At the moment, I don't know if this staff has what it takes. Perhaps Ned Coletti has something in the works. I'm fine with a trade as long as it does not involve Martin, Ethier, Kemp, Loney, Bilingsley or Broxton,

On the brightside, the Dodger bats have been crazy HOT sizzlin' since Bill Mueller took over as batting coach. All we need is decent pitching to go along with it.

The Dodgers bounced back from a solid thumping yesterday at the hands of the Phillies. Today they turned it around and came from behind to win by a score of 5-4. Russell picked up an RBI and Andre Ethier hit a 3-run shot to tie the game at 4-4. Later, Gonzo hit a tie breaking solo homerun.

When I hear trade talks involving the Dodgers, the name that almost always comes up is Andre Ethier. I just have one thing to say....SHUT UP! The kid is a good hitter now and he most definitely shows the potential to become a great hitter in the future. Trading Andre would be a mistake. I look forward to watching him in Dodger blue for many years to come!

I left the game in the 6th inning. My behind was beginning to hurt from the ass kicking! Rather than watch a baseball game, I was treated to Dodger pitchers serving up batting practice for the Phillies. It was ugly! Last I checked, the score was 15-3.

The Phils piled up 26 hits. Not bad for a team who just lost their 10,000th game in franchise history! Payback is a bitch! Oh well, there's always tomorrow!

The Giants are terrible. How terrible are they? They're so terrible that even when the Dodgers stink it up on the field, they still manage to lose!

Heading to the bottom of 8th inning, the Dodgers were enjoying a comfortable 7-2 lead when disaster struck. The bullpen decided to screw over Derek Lowe once again by letting what looked like a sure victory slip away. In the 8th, Tsao gave up a grand slam to Randy Winn. Then the usually reliable Saito gave up the tying run in the 9th to send the game into extras. Saito has now blown two consecutive save opportunities. What in the world is up with Takashi?

Early on, Dodger infielders made some silly errors, putting themselves difficult situations . Luckily, their bats made up for their miscues. Jeff Kent socked a three run homerun and later knocked in an additional run. Meat went 4-6 and took Morris deep. Russ picked up another ribbie, giving him 62 on the season. Hitting doesn't seem to be a problem for the Dodgers. However, "timely" hitting, well, that's a whole other story. They stranded a total of 19 runners throughout the game. Maddening!

The Dodgers were finally able to scratch out a run in the top of the 12th inning to win the game, so all is well in Dodgerland. I do, however, have a couple of suggestions for the Dodgers. First off, Grady, when your reliever walks the bases loaded, it's kind of an indication he doesn't have his best stuff. GIVE HIM THE GODDAMNED HOOK! And Tomato, as much as I love you, you need to LAY OFF the burgers and fries! Dude, it's the second time in recent weeks you ground into a DP in a bases loaded, no outs, situation. Come on, my grandma could beat you in a foot race!

Props to Hendrickson and Seanez, who came in and shut down the Giants setting up the Dodgers for the 8-7 victory!

The Giants are so bad this year, they're making our rivalry less fun. Oh, I still love to beat them, don't get me wrong. It just feels as though we're kicking a 20 year old three legged blind dog. I almost feel bad for Giant fans....almost!

Chad Billingsly had a nice little outing shutting out the Giants and Barriods for six innings, while the bullpen mopped up. Dodger hitters lit up the Giant's pitching staff, compiling 17 hits while scoring 9 runs. Giants fans had absolutely ZERO to cheer about. The "Beat LA" chants slowing floated away with the fog. In the end, the only fans left in the stands were wearing blue. Sucks to be a Giant fans right about now!

Martin, Ethier and Loney picked up three hits a piece. Furcal and Pierre picked up a couple hits. Nomar, Kent and Gonzalez joined the the fun, with one. Hm? Wonder if the hot bats lately have anything to do with new hitting coach Bill Mueller? If so, I like what he' doing! Keep it up Billy! Dodgers win, 9-1.

Fun facts:
Dodger pitching induced Barriods to hit into two double plays tonight. The last time that happened was July 4, 1991. Yup, sixteen years ago!

What do the above years signify? Ah yes, the good old days! Unbelievable as it may seem, there was actually a time when the American League were the National League's Bitches. The NL rattled off 11 consecutive wins during that time span! Guess this game goes in cycles, as the NL was once again, downed by the AL in this year's all star game by a score of 5-4.

Oh well, we'll get 'em next year! At least I hope so...cuz I'm sick and tired of this hideous losing streak. It must end!

Highlight: Martin, Penny and Saito getting booed by San Franciscans when they were announced! The rivalry is alive and well!

Lowlight: Homerun Derby....seriously, what a yawnfest! The only interesting thing was Eric Byrnes' swimming bulldog in McCovey Cove!

All Star Break

The Dodgers salvaged the final game of the 3 game series with the Marlins, wininng 9-3. After they let one get away on Friday night, they proceeded to lose Saturday's game, as well. They looked listless and tired!

Finally, the All Star break is upon us and it's time for the Boys in Blue to regroup. They finished the first half with a brutal schedule of 20 consecutive games without a day off. Their record at the break is 49-40. Not bad, but it could have and should have been better. Obviously, it wasn't helpful when early on when they lost Jason Schmidt for the season due to shoulder problems. Then recently Randy Wolf went down with shoulder stiffness.

Team clutch hitting was less than stellar and could use deifinte improvement. The Dodgers frustratingly left too many runners stranded on base. Perhaps with the hitting coach change (Mueller replacing Murray), the boys will approach their at bats with a little more patience. I'd love to see Nomar and Jeff have a solid second half, as they haven't played to their capabilities and haven't contributed as much as hoped. If those two turn in on, I predict the Dodgers run away with the division!

Brad Penny and Derek "Hard Luck" Lowe have been superb pretty much all season. Here's hoping for an equally great second half, although it would be nice to see the Dodgers score some runs for Lowe. His run suuport has been God awful. I feel for the dude! Billz will only get stronger and more seasoned as time progresses, so no worries there. Wolf should bounce back and display the form he had earlier in the season. The bullpen with Saito and Broxton have been lights out, so no complaints.

I loved the decision to call up some of the youngsters from the farm. James Loney and Matt Kemp have certainly energized the team and I look forward to watching them develop. Props to Mr. Russell Martin, who is already achieving legendary status here in LA. His first half numbers were simply amazing. 11 homeruns, 60 ribbies, .306 AVG, 16 stolen bases, 26 runners caught stealing...it's no wonder he was named the National League starting catcher for the allstar game! If his second half supercedes his first, watch out we've got a bonafide STAR! I love to watch this kid! He plays with such passion and heart!

I also want to give a shout out to Luis "Gonzo" Gonzalez who has surpassed even my expectations. I liked the signing from the begininng, even though many fans grumbled about his age and noodle arm. Ha! Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Way to go Gonzo!!!

New meaning to 'Game Over'

Okay, so I haven't lobbied for a player to be removed from the Dodgers' roster since the good old days of Odalis Perez. Man, I wanted that dude gone at any cost. Luckily, my wish came true. Now, I find myself once again calling for the dismissal of another Dodger pitcher. This time the object of my ire is Brett Tomko, who gives a new meaning to 'Game Over.' His stats to date prove he is not a major league caliber pitcher. Brett is 1-7 with a 6.18 ERA. Everytime he is inserted into a game, it's most likely an automatic loss. The manager knows it, the fans know it and even Brett knows it. The Dodger record when Brett makes an appearance is 4-15. What in the world are Coletti and Little waiting for? It makes me sick when I hear Brett's name introduced. I know it will be a loss!

Friday night's debacle was just another in a long line of one of painful losses this season. I admit, it wasn't entirely Brett's fault. Saito came on, didn't do his job and blew a save in the 9th. A rarity indeed. However, in my humble opinion, Grady Little did a piss poor job and managed the team into a loss against the Marlins. He used all his pitchers and position players by the 10th inning. Seriously, as good a hitter as pitcher Brad Penny is, he was on deck as a pinch hitter with a possible game winning situation in the bottom of the 10th. Regardless of bad managing, Brett must still go. He is a detriment to the team. I don't hate the guy, I just want him gone! Now, please!

Update: And I thought I was harshly voicing my displeasure with Brett Tomko! Some fans are ruthless! Check this out! Yikes!

The Dodgers have become the only sports franchise in history to reach an unbelievable attendance milestone. One Hundred and Seventy-Five Million fans have gone through the turn-styles. Wow!

The Dodgers have taken the first two of a four game series at home against the Atlanta Braves, but not before lefty Randy Wolf ran into some problems. He was chased from the game in the 3rd inning experiencing some shoulder stiffness. Randy will undergo an MRI. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and he can get himself back on track! On the brightside, DJ Houlton, who was called up recently, did a great job shutting down the best hitting team in the NL for three solid innings. His performance set up a chance a Dodger victory. They did not disappoint. Final score, Dodgers 7, Braves 6.

The Dodgers who are 12 games above .500 for the first time this season are once again tied with the Padres for first place. I swear this is gonna be a nail biter until the end!

Our work has paid off. Young Mr. Russell Martin has been voted in as the starting catcher for the National League team by a margin of over 300,000 votes. Nice job peeps, give yourselves a pat on the back! Russ deserves every bit of praise bestowed upon him. In case there are any doubters out there, check out his stats in comparison.

Other Dodgers picked by players and managers were Takashi Saito and Brad Penny. Both have been light out this season, so congrats to them for making the squad and representing the Los Angeles Dodgers!

In other Dodger related news: The Dodgers FINALLY managed get that damn monkey of their back, otherwise, known as the pesky San Diego Padres! I hate losing to them and unfortunately, the Dodgers have not been able to solve them, resulting in continous beat down. On the verge of getting swept yet again, right hander Chad Billingsley, stepped up huge! He went 7 innings, striking out nine, while scattering three harmless singles. The bullpen pen mopped up the 8th and 9th, preserving not only a 5-0 shutout, but a little bit of their dignity, as well.

This game was a step in the right direction for Chad. He's got all the tools to become a dominating pitcher and as long as he can remain consistent, the Dodger rotation is that much stronger. Kudos Chad! Great effort!

Time for a little humor. Sorry it's at the expense of Juan Pierre and Luis Gonzales. Keep in mind I like both these players! Yeah, I know many fans dislike Juan, but I'm not one of those! Anyhoo, Juan and Luis seem to have some uncanny look-a-likes and I could'nt resist posting these pics.

Musical positions, let the games begin!

It's no secret my man, Nomar, has been struggling at the plate. It's sometimes painful to watch him flailing away with the lumber and having no success. Not to say that he hasn't driven in a number of key runs, because he has. And not to say he won't snap out of this horrible funk! Please, please, please Nomar!! However, since his BA has been steadily in the decline since May, the Dodger brass had no choice but to call up a youngster by the name of James Loney. I wholeheartedly approve of this move. This kid is a superb hitter and has a very bright future, as do the Dodgers with him.

All young Mr. Loney has done since being called up is hit .448 in 29 at bats. He has knocked in 9 runs and smacked a couple of homers. He needs, no, must be in the lineup. The problem is, he is a first baseman, as is Nomar. Management tried Loney in the outfield, but that decision almost cost them dearly. See previous post. Something about hitting a wall... So, where does that leave the Dodgers? The only logical solution would be to move Nomar to third base and that is just what has been announced. Before tonight's game, Nomar was taking grounders at third.

Nomar, is a team player. He realizes he is struggling and accepts the move with no qualms. Should Nomar be unable to handle the hot corner, the Dodgers have a couple of backups on the roster, with Tony Abreu and Wilson Betemit. We shall see how this experiment unfolds. Personally, I am crossing my fingers. Nomar won the hearts of fans last season, with his intensity and absolute masterful clutch hitting. I refuse to give up on him and will root for him to come around and help the Dodgers get into the playoffs. I have faith!

On another note, Brad Penny has been and absolute animal on the mound!! With his win over the D'Backs tonight, his record is now, 10-1. His ERA has dropped to 2.03. Brad will surely be asked to the Allstar game. I do hope he is because he deserves it. However, if he is, I hope he does not pitch. Dodger fans must remember what happened last year during and after the Allstar game, I'm sure they're with me on this one.

Got Russell Martin?

Earlier in the week, the Dodgers hit the road with a stop in Toronto, where they took two of a three. The series opened with a 10-1 Dodger pounding of the Blue Jays. The following night, the Blue Jays returned the favor with their own 12-1 pounding of the Dodgers. In the rubber game, Russell Martin delivered a bases loaded double to give the Dodgers the win. Finally, the Dodgers win an interleague series! Thank the stars Vernon Wells is nowhere to be found!

Upon returning to his native land in Canada, Russell Martin was given the royal red carpet treatment. Family and friends were in attendance to watch Russell's triumphant return. To say Russell Martin has achieved 'Rock Star' status in Los Angeles would be putting it mildly. And it seems Russell-Mania is catching fire. Fans all across the U.S and Canada have stuffed allstar ballots, voting for Russell as the starting catcher for the National League team. Read about Russell's meteoric rise.

The next stop on the roadtrip took the boys South to Florida. In the opener, the Blue doubled up on the Devil Rays, beating them with a score of 6-3. Russell added another couple of RBIs, giving him a total of 47. What can I say about Russell, except that he is a STUD. He's on pace to hit 20 homeruns and drive in over 100 runs! Wow!!

Addt'l note: T.V.'s EXTRA has named Russell one of the country's most eligible bachlors. Marry me Russell??? *lol*

Dodgers hit a wall...literally!

Just when I begin to believe the Dodgers have it all figured out and are just about ready to go on a tear, they hit a brick wall. For them, that brick wall is named, Anaheim! Ugh! Why can't they beat this team?? I'm thinking, it's gotta be mental. There's no other explanation. Sure, the Angels are a good club, but come on, they're not unbeatable. The Dodger pitching staff's ERA is slightly better, however, their team batting AVG is a bit higher. I'd say they're evenly matched. So what's the damned problem? I'm tired of bandwagon Angel fans talking smack. S.I.C.K. O.F. I.T., actually!

After sweeping the Mets, I was certain this was it. This was the moment the Dodgers would seize the opportunity and start pulling away from the pack in the standings. I was wrong. Instead, they've lost ground and now find themselves 1.5 games out behind the D-Backs and Padres. I imagine they'd still be right up there in the standings, if they could have at least split the games with the Angels. Instead, the Blue go an embarrassing, 1-5. I'm really beginning to dread this interleague crap! The last few years have brought nothing but misery to the Dodgers and their fans!

Highlights for today's game were few and far between. The only bright spot was Nomar, who at last, seems to have found his stroke. He drove in 3 of the 4 runs scored today. The man has been dreadful these past few weeks. I still love him though! Now, if only Kent would heat up!

Note to Grady: If you're gonna play James Loney in the outfield, the least you can do is make sure he knows how to play the position! Damn, that was a nasty knock he took on the shot by GMJr! The boy ran straight smack into the wall, as if he'd forgotten it was there! Sheesh!

Thank goodness the Dodgers have tthe day off tomorrow as they head to Toronto. I expect them time to regroup and start playin' some ball, they way I know they can!

Go-Go-Gonzo!

I'll be honest. When I'd heard forty year old veteran, Luis Gonzalez, aka Gonzo, had been signed in the offseason, I immediately liked the move. Although at the tail end of a great career, I felt Luis' experience, knowledge and influence would have a positive impact on the young Dodger pups, i.e., Martin, Loney, Kemp, Ethier, Abreu, et al.

Luis experienced a rather shaky beginning to the 2007 season. He was dropping easy flies, making mental mistakes, wasn't covering much ground and worst of all, was not hitting a lick. Still, all that was nothing compared to the liability of his throwing arm. Every team the Dodgers played took advantage and stretched singles into double, doubles into triples, etc... They challenged Luis at every opportunity, and won. It did not bode well for the Dodgers. It also didn't help matters that Juan Pierre, also a newly acquired player, was in the same boat in centerfield. I actually cringed any time the ball was hit their way!

The fans and the press were ready to run these two out of town by the end of April. Me, I wanted to wait and let them have a legitimate shot. I disliked the boos and the constant criticizing in the press (Simers and Plaschke are first class jerks). People can be so merciless. I pulled for Juan and Luis. I prayed for that special game, where they would do something so dramatic and wonderful that they'd finally win the fans and the city over.

To date, Pierre is still struggling and not playing the way he's capable of. Although, he is steadily improving. Luis, on the other hand, is slowly and quietly worming his way into the the hearts of all Dodger fans. It began in May. He settled in at the plate and began doing what he does best, which is hit and hit consistently. His doubles started piling up, he began driving in runs and he was playing leftfield adequately.

Last night was the game I believe Luis became a Dodger. Derek Lowe who has lights out lately, has also been a hard luck pitcher. The man has gotten no run support. He could easily be 10-3, rather than 7-6. Just when it looked as though Lowe would pitch another masterpiece and have nothing to show for it, the Dodgers mounted a bit of a rally. With the bases loaded, in the 6th inning against the Angels, Luis hit a sharp single to left to drive in two and hand Derek the illusive victory. It was a beautiful sight to see and I'm glad to have been there to witness it. There was a playoff atmosphere at Dodger Stadium. The fans rocked and rolled throughout the tough game and no one left their seats to get a jump on the traffic. Who says Dodger fans aren't passionate?

Luis seems to have been accepted with open arms by Los Angeles and its fans. Now, if Pierre could get to his moment of glory, I have no doubt our team would be complete.

The Dodgers came back from a 3-0 deficit to polish off the Mets at the Ravine tonight, 5-3. This is the Dodger team I know and love. They were scrappy and never gave up. Pierre did his job and was on base three times tonight, while stealing a base and bugging Mets starter, El Duque.

Gonzalez who got off to a shaky start, is now a doubles machine and hitting .300. He had two extra base hits tonight, knocking in a run and later scoring on Ethier's bloop single. James Loney later doubled deep to left center and also picked up his second RBI since being called up a few days ago. Russell Martin picked up his 41st RBI. Randy Wolf who surrendered three early runs wasn't sharp, but had enough to keep the Met sluggers at bay. The bullpen combo of Billz, Big John and Sammy mopped up, completely shutting down the Mets for the final three innings.

I 've gotta give props to rookie Tony Abreu who did something rarley seen. With one out and a runner at third, Little called for a squeeze. Abreu lunged at a pitchout and somehow managed to get enough wood on the ball for it to squirt out of Met catcher LoDuca's grasp. LoDuca was able to tag Loney coming down the line. However, LoDuca became greedy and fired a wild throw to first which ended up in right field. When the dust settled, little Tony was at third and was picked up by Betemit who came off the bench! BTW, I'm digging the way Meat is wearing his pants! I love the new look, Meat! Abreu scoring was a BIG insurance run.

Let's hope this momentum carries into tomorrow night's game!

On another note, the Dodger fan's campaign to get Russell to the top spot in Allstar voting has paid off bigtime. Russ has overtaken Paul LoDuca of the Mets for the number one spot. Keep up the good work folks! And remember to keep voting and vote often!

ENOUGH!!! This is pathetic!! I have been reading several Dodger boards and they’re all full of the same damn thing! Which is, GARBAGE! I don't mind constructive critiscm, but according to some “Dodger fans,” it’s doomsday, it’s over, fire this person, fire that person, get rid of Pierre, bench Nomar, Kent’s a defensive liability, Schmidt sucks, Fire Coletti, Grady must go, the sky is falling, yadda, blah, etc…. You get the picture?

LISTEN UP CHILDREN, IT'S JUNE 11TH, THERE'S A LONG WAY TO GO, SO CALM THE HELL DOWN, YOU WHINEY BANDWAGONERS, PUT THE PITCHFORKS DOWN, YOU WANNABE ARMCHAIR GENERALS!!

For the record, I get very upset when the Dodgers lose. So much so, that I’ve been known to give away my tickets because I can’t bear to watch them at times. Occasionally, game results make physically sick and sometimes I have a tough time sleeping. This is what the Dodgers do to me! I especially feel this kind of torment on nights for instance, when Derek Lowe throws a four hit complete game and loses. It’s already happened three times this season. Or when Schmidt throws a one hitter through six and loses. Or when the Dodgers are up 5-1 in the 9th, only to turn around and give up five runs and lose. And basically anytime they are swept by the Giants, Padres, Mets or Angels. THESE THINGS PISS ME OFF!! But I’ll tell you what, I would NEVER resort to name calling of our team or players. I would NEVER boo certain players at the Stadium. That's just plain tacky!

I am a fan. The term “fan” refers to someone who has an intense, occasionally overwhelming liking of a person, group of persons, work of art, idea, or trend. In this case, the intense occasionally overwhelming like, is directed at the Dodgers, who can and will frustrate the hell out of me sometimes. Nonetheless, they’re my team. I love them!

From the looks of things lately, it’s obvious the Dodgers have hit a rough patch. They’re not hitting and their defense is lacking. But what team doesn’t experience sour moments? Heck, even some well-established superstars are struggling in one form or another. Do these names ring any bells? Vernon Wells, Andrew Jones, Jermaine Dye, Carlos Delgado, Manny Ramirez, Barry Buckethead Bonds, and the list goes on…

So for the life of me, I don’t understand this Chicken Little attitude by some of the fans. They’re acting as though the Dodgers have been eliminated from the playoffs and there is little or no hope. The team is fine, or shall I say, will be fine. Even with all of their offensive struggles, they are 35-28, 1-1/2 games out of first.

RELAX, TAKE A CHILL PILL AND SUPPORT YOUR TEAM!

Nomar and Kent will come around with the bats. Pierre will eventually right himself and do the job he’s being paid to do. Dodger RISP average will improve. The kids, Martin, Ethier, Abreu, Loney and Kemp, will continue to contribute. The pitching staff will continue to do a fantastic job. The Dodgers will have a successful season.

The Blue Crew are heading into a tough part of their schedule. They’ll be facing the Mets and Angels this week. I don’t believe this is a do or die situation, but I do believe it will be a test of sorts.

Come on Boys, time to wake up and do some damage!

The Killer Tomato Strike Again!

The Dodgers certainly needed a lift after the debacle of the San Diego series. Suffice to say, getting swept hurt. Badly! Especially when they had two superb pitching performances by Schmidt and Kuo. In the third game, the Blue had been cruising along with a 5-1 lead in the 9th, when disaster struck. Due to shotty fielding, wierd bounces, and a wild Jonathan Broxton, things ended ugly as the Padres came from behind to sweep the series. I hate to admit this, but I was so angry and disgusted with the team, that I gave away my tickets for the Interleague showdown at the Ravine against the Toronto Blue Jays. I stayed home and watched it on the tube, even after I had promised myself I wouldn't. Sometimes the Dodgers are just not good for my blood pressure and heart.

This game too, was diffuclt to watch. Penny had another freaking fanstastic outing, only to go out losing by a score of 1-0. Luckily for him, in the bottom of the 7th, with a runner on, Luis Gonzalez, knocked one over the wall, for a two run shot. And just like that, Penny looked as though he'd pick up his 8th win. Not to be. Takashi Saito, who has been money for the Dodgers all season, gave up a game tying homerun in the 9th to Matt Stairs.

The Dodger had an opportunity to win it in the 9th with two runners on and no outs, but failed. In the 10th, after Tony Abreu drew a walk, it was Tomato time! It was kinda comical listening to long time Dodger broadcaster, Vin Scully. He was perplexed by the fact that the Toronto pitcher threw Olmedo a fastball for the first pitch and ultimately, his last. Everyone in the league should know by now, you should NEVER throw Olmedo a fastball. Lucky for us, he did! The Tomato launched a rope for a two run bomb that secured the Dodger victory. Vinny put it best, "The Tomato sure canned that one!"

The Dodgers sure needed the lift. The hot and cold offense has been a pain in the a$$ and frustrating at times. Let's hope Kent and Nomar pick up the pace. When they do, the Dodgers will be in great shape.

Dodgers Sink Pirates

Honestsly, sometimes I wonder how exactly it is the Dodgers keep winning ballgames. They do it so quietly. They sneak up when you're not looking and BAM...you're on the short end of the stick. The Dodgers won the three game series in Pittsburgh, but not before Pirates starter Tom Gorzelanny manhandled them for six solid innings. It was excruciatingly painful to watch actually. Good Lord, they made Gorzelanny look like friggen Cy Young. Unfortunately, Brad Penny wasn't his usual dominant self and before long, the Pirates had amassed 4 runs.

Not to worry though. The Boys in Blue finally realized there was a game going on and heated up in the 7th and 8th. The Dodgers picked up a three runs in the 7th. Then in the 8th, Russell Martin opened with a clean single, followed by an Either homerun. Just like that, the Pirates bullpen blew Gorzalanny's great effort. With the Dodgers now leading 5-4, the bullpen took over and that was all she wrote. Broxton, Saito and Beimel mopped up. The Dodgers did have a bit of a scare. Saito was taken out of the game due to a pulled hammy. They're saying it's not serious, so let's hope for the best. That dude has been money!

Next up, the Dodgers head to Petco Park. Come on Boys, let's put the hurt on the Madres! I'm sorta selfish and I don't like sharing 1st Place

Update 6/4/07: Well hell, I got a little ahead of myself. The Dodgers are in Pittsburgh for another night. Derek Lowe will be on the mound. Thank goodness, we could use another win!

Martin Continues to Amaze

The Dodgers edged out the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight by a score of 5-4. Lefty Randy Wolf didn't have his best stuff tonight, but had just enough to pick up his 7th win of the season. The difference in tonight's game was none other than young catching sensation, Russell Martin. The boy is a stud! He hit his thrid consecutive homerun in as many days...all to deep centerfield! Hardly a game goes by that Russell somehow does not have a hand in the victory. Whether it's offensively or defensively, Martin continues to amaze. Russell plays the game with such passion and has won the love and admiration of the Dodger Nation. Even at the tender age of 22, he has displayed leadership qualities. He has earned the respect of this teammates and coaches. There hasn't been an official captain for the Dodgers since Davey Lopes. It's time! Russell Martin, Captain for your Los Angeles Dodgers!

On another note, seriously people, it would be a total travesty if Russell is not the starting catcher for the National League Allstar team. He leads all NL catchers in just about every catagory there is. Go to MLB.com and vote for Russell. You can vote up to 25 times. Go! Now!

I love this dude! He rocks my Dodger World! He almost single handedly won the game last night against the Brewers. First, he had a base clearing double for three RBIs. He scored on Luis Gonzalez' single. He also had a scoring sacrifice fly to knock in another run. He also threw out a Brewer daring to attempt a steal. He even got a homerun called back by the umpires...seems the ball was on the wrong side of the foul pole....whatever....Russell didn't need it!

So what does Russell get for his troubles? A fastball aimed at his head. Guess Brewer pitcher Villanueva apparently had enough of Russ. No worries through, Russ, brushed himself off and gave Villanueva the evil death stare, daring him to say something. He didn't. Cowardly bastard!

Final score, Dodgers 5, Brewers 1. Two of three from the Brewers, Baby!! Paybacks are a bitch!

Brad Penny had a great outing and just shut down Milwaukee. The bullpen preserved the win beautifully.

Wilson "Meat" Betemit is finally coming out of his season long coma! In the 6th inning, Meat, who has been benched and replaced at 3rd base by Andy LaRoche, hit a pinch hit three run shot to dead center to give the Dodgers the lead. That's his thrid pinch hit homerun this season. Woah! Although starter Randy Wolf did not have a great night, he kept the Dodgers within reach. And reach they did! Seriously, I cannot remember the last time the Blue have won back to back games from the Cardinals.

Saito did it again! He got his 13th save of the season. That dude is Bad to the Bone! Heh...that's Takashi's song at the Stadium. It really is kinda funny to hear the opening riff, then the crowd going wild because they know who is coming in. The bullpen gates swing open and this little skinny Japanese dude strolls to the mound. The whole thing is very menacing! *LOL* I love Saito, especially his fist pump and 1000 watt smile when he nails the game shut! Final score, Dodgers 5, Cardinals 4.

The short of it is this, Raffy has 14 hits in 16 at bats. THREE CONSECUTIVE FOUR HIT GAMES! Since Saturday, his average has shot up from a miniscule .214 to a whopping .297. IN ONLY 4 GAMES, WOW! Personally, I've never seen anything like it! My fingers are crossed for Furcal making it four consecutive games!

GO RAFFY GO!

Even with a lackluster pitching effort, Derek Lowe had just enough to propel the Dodgers over the dreaded Cardinals. FINALLY! They Blue had lost 10 straight to Cards, dating all the way back to 2005. Sheesh, last time we beat the damn RedBirds, it was "Lima Time" at the Ravine...what the hell does that tell ya?

It wasn't easy, but the Dodgers finally got the Cardinal monkey off their backs and win, 9-7.

On another note: This one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I love baseball! And I think I love Ken Griffey Jr. now. Not only is he a good sport about being heckled at Dodger Stadium, but he handled it class and humor. Wouldn't it have been lovely if Junior were chasing Aaron rather than Barriods? The whole world would've been in Griffey's corner rooting him on. I know I would have been!

I remember the 70's and the Big Red Machine. Griffey, Concepcion, Morgan, Bench, Perez and Rose. They gave the Dodgers fits and I loathed them. The nickename no longer applies. The 2007 Reds are more like the Little Pink Machine. They think they can...they think they can...they think they can... but no, they really can't! The Dodgers own them going back to last season! Heh...payback is a bitch! The Dodgers clubbed the Reds, 10-5, and swept the three game series. The Blue had a team high 18 hits and upped their record to 23-15. They are in sole possession of 1st place, leading the Madres by 3 games. The funny thing, I still feel as though they haven't really gelled as a team, yet they still manage to win ballgames.

Below is an example of Cincy's fuitless endeavors at the Ravine. Centerfielder, Brad Freel, scales the outfield wall in pointless pursuit of a Jeff Kent homerun. She is gone!

After a frustrating stop in Atlanta (I wanted to strangle Grady yesterday), the Dodgers bounced back in Florida. Brad Penny, for the first time in his career, struck out 14. He fanned 7 of the first 10 batters he faced. The Dodgers ended up routing the Fish by a score of 6-1. Penny has lowered his ERA to 1.39.

Wilson Betemit who has struggling, batting a meager .153, seems to have lost his starting position at 3rd base. Rookie, Andy LaRoche has been called up and the move has paid immediate dividends. Andy is 2-6 with a pair of RBI in two starts. Mark Hendrickson (2-0, ERA 1.30) takes the mound for the Blue tomorrow for the second of a four game series.

Attack of the Killer Tomato

The Dodgers beat the D'Backs, 2-1, on a game winning single in the bottom of the 9th inning by Olmedo The Killer Tomato" Saenz. I love this guy! He's been struggling, but came through in a pinch tonight! Thank goodness I was there tonight to enjoy it! In winning, the Dodgers put a halt to the D'Backs' 6 game win streak and have retaken the division lead. Brad Penny pitched an excellent 6 innings only allowing 3 hits, but did not get the win.

A bad fielding decision by Ethier in rightfield landed Byrnes at third. He came around to score to tie the ballgame at 1-1. The Dodgers are having an awful time scoring runs of late. This game was no exception. They left the bases loaded twice. Whatever they had during their hot start has apparently gone MIA. Frustration and impatience by some hitters are leading to few runs being scored. They're picking up squeakers, but that won't last. Grady has got to shake up this lineup. Perhaps, moving Pierre down, calling up James Loney or benching Betemit, who as of today, is hitting a paltry .125. That will not cut it at the Major League level. Whatever the move, something must be done.

The rubber game is at noon tomorrow. On the mound for the Dodgers will be Mark Hendrickson, who has been a lifesaver thus far. Keep it going Mark! You are definitely not the same cat who drove me nuts with his ineffectiveness last season!

Here you have it...the official box score for today's marathon game, which lasted almost five hours.

The Dodgers edged out the Padres by a score of 5-4. The bullpen was absolutely superb! After starter Derek Lowe was pulled in the 7th in a 4-4 tie, a combination of Joe Beimel, Jonathan Broxton, Chin-Hui Tsao, Rudy Seanez, Takashi Saito and Chad Billingsley, snuffed any Padre hopes of winning the ballgame. Combined, they gave up one measly single in the 13th and that was all.

I must reluctantly give props to the S.D. bullpen who almost (but not quite) matched the Dodger pen. Wilson Valdez who has been quite a nice little fit as a utility player for the Dodgers carried in the winning run. He singled and was knocked in on a Brady Clark double in the top of the 17th inning. Thank God, coz I was this close throwing in the towel after the Dodgers left so many damn men on base! I think it was something ridiculous like 15! Argh! No matter, Wilson Valdez scores...Dodgers win! Since this game almost went 18 innings, perhaps the win should count for two in the standings! Yes, I know, wishful thinking!

The Dodgers jump on the 5 Fwy and head north to Chavez Ravine to meet the D'Backs who are hot on their heels in the standings. Randy Wolf better be on his game tomorrow as the bullpen is pretty spent!

Mr. Clutch Does San Diego!

The Dodgers finally ended a painful four game skid with a dramatic come from behind victory in San Diego. After getting swept at home by the Hated Ones from S.F., the Dodgers took to the road to open up a three game series with the Pads. Up until the 9th inning, the losing streak looked as though it might have been extended to five.

I must give praise where praise is due. For his second straight start filling in for the ailing Jason Schmidt, lanky lefty, Mark Hendrickson had another solid outing, allowing only 2 hits and one earned run through 5 innings. This is not the same fellow from last season, is it? Unfortunately, Hendrickson left the ballgame tied at 1-1 and was replaced Chad Billingsley, who promptly served up 3 runs in the 6th. I was pissed! Billz has been shaky and his ERA has ballooned to 6.94. Not good...this kid has got to get it together!

The Dodgers added a run and cut the lead in half in the 7th, the score 4-2. In the 9th, the Dodgers mounted a comeback with some timely hitting in addition to poor fielding by Padre first basemen, who muffed a bunt by Raffy Furcal. Another bunt later and the Dodgers had runners on 2nd and 3rd. The Padres brought in their closer, Trevor Hoffman, who has given the Dodgers fits throughout the years. It was also Trevor Hoffman Night at Petco Park. Not to worry though, Nomar Garciaparra(4-4), who is hitting an astonishing .625 with runners in scoring position, waited on deck. Nomar struck again. He scorched a double and tied the game at 4-4. And for whatever reason, Hoffman intentionally walked the next batter, Luis Gonzalez, setting the table for hot hitting Russell Martin. Personally, I thought they were insane for that move! They were burned instantly, as Russ roped a long double to centerfield. Mike Cameron could not catch up to it and just like that, the Dodgers were up, 6-4. Dodger closer, Takashi Saito gave up a homerun in the bottom of the 9th, but eventually got his 7th save.

Kudos to Mr. CLUTCH, Nomar Garciaparra and to rightfielder, Andre Ethier who made some dazzling catches and saved a whole mess of runs keeping the Blue close.

The Dodgers are 8-3 on the road and 6-6 at home. At this rate, and although I'd miss them terribly, I wish they didn't have to play at the home. Their record stinks at the Ravine! Is there any way to keep them away?

I Heart Russell Martin

Is there anything this boy can't do? Apparently not! With the game tied at 3-3 and the bases bulging with blue, Russell crushed a homerun into the left field bullpen for his first career Grand Slam. A walk off to boot! This kid is special. He hits for average and power, he the best defensive catcher the Dodgers have had since Mike Scioscia. He's got a cannon for an arm throwing out baserunners runners trying to steal and he calls a helluva ballgame! He's got it all!

This was a bizarre game. There were lots of wild pitches, pass balls, errors, walks and tons of pitching changes. I believe there were 11 in total. Although the Dodgers didn't bring their "A" game, they managed to hang in there, until the bottom of the 10th, when Russ uncorked his slam. The Dodgers win, 7-3 and are 13-5 over all, the owners of the best record in all of baseball.

This team has been interesting to watch thus far. They don't have the one big power hitter to rely on, consequently, when one or two players are struggling, someone steps up to pick up the slack. The other observation is the harmony in the clubhouse. These players really do seem to like and respect each other. I swear Jeff Kent has smiled more this short season than the rest combined. They seriously look as though they're all having fun on the field. The team chemistry is the best I can remember in years, if not decades. So perhaps Ned Coletti was correct in signing "character" players rather than egomaniacs concerned with their own stats. Whatever it is, I love it and it's a fan's dream!

The Dodgers go for the sweep against the Pirates tomorrow. Let's get the brooms out peeps!

Dodgers Stylin'

The Dodgers dropped one last night in Colorado. It was pretty much a give-away, as Grady Little gave most of the starters the night off. Derek Lowe lacked any sharpness and was in constant trouble, finally succumbing in the 4th. Final score, 7-2. Bleh!

This afternoon was a different story all together. The regulars were back and so were the hot Dodger bats and stellar pitching. Mark Hendrickson, who had been relegated to the bullpen last season, was given the start in place of Jason Schmidt. He hurled a fantastic game, scattering 5 hits, giving up one run through 6 innings. When the Dodgers traded for Hendrickson from the Devil Rays last season, this type of effort is what I thought we'd see. Instead, he was just atrocious, hence the bullpen duties. But if today is any indication of what he can give us, Brett Tomko better stay on his toes, otherwise, he'll be bumped out of the rotation pronto!

Jeff Kent seems to have found his stroke, going 3-4 with a couple of ribbies. I swear that dude is playing with a fire I've never seen before...I love it! Pierre picked up a pair of hits. Andre Ethier also picked up a pair of hits. He has perked up as of late, his average now at .282. Luis Gonzalez keeps chugging along nicely. Unfornuately, Russell Martin's 9 game hitting streak came to an end, but not without him picking up a run. It was a productive O-pher. The bullpen was brilliant once again. Tsao, Beimel and Broxton SLAMMED the door on the Rox and closed out the game. Dodgers win, 8-1.

What I'm really digging so far is the fact that no one player is carrying the team. Every game produces a different hero, whether it's the starting pitcher, the bullpen or a extra hot hitter in the lineup. This is a total team effort. Raffy Furcal and Wilson Betemit are hitting below the Mendoza line, but I expect them to turn it around soon. Watch out when they do!

Speed Kills

Look out, a rabbit is on the loose and his name is Juan Pierre! This guy can flat out fly around the base paths. In the 7th inning, with the game on the line and a runner on second base, Juan lined a triple into the right center gap and came around to score on a bad relay throw to third. He makes pitchers and players nervous with his speed causing them to hurry up their throws and make mistakes. Sure his defense is a bit shaky, but I'll take his speed any day of the week! Pierre started the season slowly, but his bat is showing definite signs of life. Rock on dude, I'm rooting for you!

Juan Pierre

This game was a struggle for starter Brett Tomko who went a grueling 5 innings. He did not retire the side in order in any of those innings, however, he battled and hung in there. Tomko allowed 8 hits and 2 earned runs. The infield saved his bacon on more than one occasion, turning two double plays. With the game knotted at 4-4, Tomko was replaced by Chad Billingsley, who had better luck with the D'back's lineup, shutting them down. Big Bad Jonathan Broxton pitched the 8th and Samurai Saito closed it out, earning his 6 straight save. Dodgers win 6-4.

Additional note: Jason Schmidt was placed on the DL. Mark Hendrickson will probably get the nod.

Chalk up another "W"

Pitching and defense wins ballgames. That and a little timely hitting, which is exactly what the Dodgers did to beat the D'Backs tonight in Arizona by a score of 5-1.

Brad Penny pitched a strong 7 innings, scattering 5 hits, giving up one run. He's looking good so far. Penny seems to have changed tactics in regards to his pitching style. Last season it was pure heat. This season, he's mixing in a lot of offspeed stuff, thereby keeping the hitters off balance. Whatever he's doing, its working!

My main man, Nomar, has been on a tear, batting over .400 in the last week. He hit his first dinger tonight and now has 10 ribbies! Yee-haw! It was just a matter of time before his bat woke up.

Russell Martin, once again threw what is now becoming his trademark the leg block, thus preventing a run from scoring. It began with a rope double, which Gonzalez fielded nicely. He fired to Furcal, who then threw a bullet to Russell. It was textbook! Out at the plate! I could get used to hearing that all season!

The Dodgers are in first place and now own the best record in baseball at 9-4. Yeah, it's early, so sue me!

Forty-Two

After the brawl this weekend with the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers are the last ones standing! The slugfest began at Chavez Ravine on Friday night when the Dodgers pulverized the Pads, 9-1. That game also signified the return of shortstop Rafael Furcal. Raffy went 2-5 and had 2 RBIs. He also made his presence known on the field making some marvelous plays. Oh how I missed you!

Saturday was not a good day. Jason Schmidt seems to be having a hard time adjusting to his new team, as evidenced by his ERA which is now a whopping 7.36. His fastball is nowhere to be found. The Mads won 7-2.

Sunday's contest was not only another spanking of the Padres by the Dodgers, 9-3, but also a tribute to the great Jackie Robinson. Jackie, of course, broke the color barrier in the Major Leagues sixty years ago on this date. It was not an easy journey, but it was one which Jackie handled with strength, character and pure class. The entire Dodger team and coaching staff wore number "42" in his honor, along with many other players in the MLB. Jackie's number is the only one retired by all major league teams. It is a fitting tribute to a great player and man.

Shut Out for Penny

Another "W" for the Blue. The recently slimmed down Brad Penny pitched another gem tonight. He also made two great defensive plays. One was a diving catch on a pop up bunt. The other was a bouncer up the middle that he bare-handed then flipped to first for the put out. I'm convinced he could not have made any of those plays last season, as he was carrying quite a few extra pounds as shown on the 2006 vs. 2007 pic below!

The Rockies were held to only two hits and were completely shut down. Brad wobbled a little in the 7th and was pulled for Big Bad Jonathan Broxton, who promptly came in and put a stop to any ideas of a rally. Brox also pitched a flawless 8th. Saito came on in the 9th and earned his 5th straight save in as many chances.

For the Dodgers, the scoring came in the 3rd inning, when with two outs, Pierre singled, quickly followed by a Martin single. With Nomar at the plate, Pierre and Russell pulled off a text book perfect double steal. They caught Rockies pitcher Hirsh napping on the mound. Nomar, of course, singled them both in. The Rockies pitcher was obviously rattled because he then committed a balk. Nomar was awarded 2nd base and Kent singled him in. Dodgers wiin 3-0! Nice start for the Dodgers who have now won 6 of their last 7 games.

Brett Tomko

The Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies, 2-1 tonight. Brett Tomko had one of his best starts ever while wearing a Dodgers uniform. He allowed 1 hit while striking out 9 through 6 innings. Unfortunately, Chad Billingsley could not hold the Rockies and allowed the tying run.

As much as the game belonged to Tomko, once again Russell Martin was very involved in the win. He had three hits, scored a run, threw out a runner while trying to steal, completed a crucial bang bang double play and knocked in the go ahead run in the bottom of the 8th. Is there anything this kid can't do? I doubt it!

Saito came in to pitch the top of the 9th and shut down the Rockies and set them down 1-2-3!

My main man Nomar had a couple of hits! Thank goodness, coz he's been in a teeny tiny slump. Mia and the babies are probably keeping his mind otherwise occupied No matter, he'll start hitting the ball soon enough! He's NOMAR, after all!

Dodgers and Rockies meet for the rubber match tomorrow night! Brad Penny is taking the hill!

Additional note: The parking was a bit better tonight! I didn't feel like committing murder!

Opening Day 2007

The Dodgers took the field for their home opener and lost! Nothing new, as they have a pretty terrible record for Opening Day. The Rockies beat them 6-3. Meh!

This is a map of the new parking configuration at Dodger Stadium...or at least what it felt like to me!

The loss wasn't the worst part of the day though. That honor belongs to the new parking system at Dodger Stadium. Not only is there a 50% increase for parking making it a ridiculous $15.00 now, but they are making Dodger fans miserable trying to enforce the "new" system. Needless to say, it is a total CLUSTERFUCK! Trying to get into the Stadium, I spent nearly two hours in lanes that did not move miles outside the Stadium. However, trying to get out was so much worse. According to the owner, Frank McCourt, the increase pays for hundreds of additional parking attendants who are supposed to guide and direct traffic. They don't do jack shit! In the end, there was nothing we could do but sit in our cars for a couple hours and honk! Here's a little comic relief provided by big sis, Gloria!

Not much to say about this game except, WooHoo!

The Dodgers took out the trash completing a three game sweep in Frisco, pounding the Gnats, 10-4. This win makes it 8 in a row and 13 of 14 going back to last year. The Dodgers own them! The Blue kicked around the newest Giant, Barry Zito! My Grandma throws harder than he does and they are paying him $126 million?? Ouch!! Nothing feels better than beating up the Giants, especially on their turf!

On another note, we've all been ragging Luis Gonzalez for his defensive faux pas out in left field, but he delivered two homeruns today going 3-4 at the plate. Luis can still hit, no doubt about it. I just hope he settles himself and makes the right adjustments defensively! Come on Luis!

The Dodger home Opener is tomorrow as they face the Rockies! I'll be there!

Pitching and Defense

Our bench players rule! Shortstop Wilson Valdez made his first start today and flashed some nice leather. He made some great defensive plays and started a nice double play to end a possible threat. He short-hopped and backhanded some tricky grounders and fired to first flawlessly, while thoroughly frustrating the Giants. He also went 3-4.

Jeff Kent always seems extra pumped when returning to his old haunt. The former Giant always receives the loudest round of boos! Of course, this only serves to pump him up as evidenced by an amazing over the shoulder catch in fricken centerfield to begin the bottom of the 9th. He looked like a 20 year old out there. Jeff also picked up a pair of ribbies on a double which would be all Dodger pitcher Derek Lowe would need on this afternoon.

D-Lowe pitched a superb game. You just know he’s on when he induces 15 grounders in a game. He scattered 4 hits though 7 innings, giving up only 1 run. Sorta makes up for his hideous Opening Day start! Big Jonathan Broxton pitched the 8th then Sammy Saito came on in the 9th to pick up this 3rd consecutive save. Just like that, the Dodgers beat the Giants, 4-1.

Additional highlights: Didn’t have see Barriod’s big ass mug since he was not in the lineup. And thankfully Gonzalez didn’t drop any flyballs in left field today!

Ode to Russell Martin

The Dodgers have found a diamond in the rough. I hate admitting this, but they have Paul ”Satan” DePodesta to thank for it. Good ol’ Depo dismantled the 2004 NL division championship Dodger team and traded away catcher Paul LoDuca. LoDuca was much beloved in Los Angeles. We fans, cried, pissed and moaned about it! I actually boycotted until Depo was fired!

After that fateful trade, the Dodgers went through several catchers, none of them ever making an impression. They tried Jason Phillips, David Ross, Dioner Navarro and even experimented with outfielder Jayson Werth behind the plate. As the 2006 season opened, Navarro injured his wrist and went on the disabled list. The Dodgers were forced to call their minor league team looking for some help. Arriving on the scene was a baby faced pudgy kid named Russell Martin.

Russell immediately made an impact. The Dodgers went on a roll and ended up winning their division. It was only the third time in MLB history in which a rookie catcher led his team to the playoffs. Russell is at the beginning of his career and the possibilities are limitless. He can hit, run, throw and call a game with the best of them.

Tonight, as the Dodgers beat the Giants 2-1, Russell threw out two baserunners trying to steal second. The highlight though, was when he masterfully blocked the plate (ala a hockey goalie) preventing a hustling Feliz from scoring on a play at home. Feliz never even touched the plate! I'm having flashbacks of Mike Scioscia! It was beautiful!

I’m not even going to comment on the state of our outfielders. Suffice to say, they are killing me with their frightening play! Every flyball is an adventure...and not a good one! Argh! Do something Grady!!!

Dodgers Hang On

Woo, that was close! The Dodgers escaped Milwaukee with a win, 5-4. This was only the third game of the season and they're already trying to give me a heart attack. I think it's time to invest in a defibrillator.

Jason Schmidt, former Giant, and formerly known as the Pilsbury Doughboy, by me, pitched a fairly decent game. I can't call him that anymore, he's wearing the sacred Blue! Jason went a strong 4 innings and got into a little trouble in the 5th. He eventually battled his way out and gave way to the bullpen. The score was 2-1, heading into the 6th. In the 7th, the Dodgers loaded the bases on a wild Villanueva that couldn't find the strike zone. Olmedo "the Tomato" Saenz came in to pinch hit and lined a double to left center knocking in two runs. Matt Kemp's flyball scored the third run of the inning. You'd think a score of 5-1 in the 8th would let you breathe a sigh of relief, wouldn't you? Wrong!

After retiring the first hitter, reliever Rudy Seanez, also had trouble finding the strike zone and loaded the bases. Seanez gave way to Takashi Saito, who promptly allowed a double to Craig Counsell! Argh! The Dodgers escaped the 8th with the score of 5-3. The 9th wasn't any easier. Saito didn't look very sharp as he struggled with his control. The Brewers scored another run and Saito came close to blowing the game. Luckily, he beared down and the Dodgers finally got their first win of the season, by a score of 5-4. Yiipes!

Additional game notes: Luis Gonzalez and Juan Pierre finally got a couple hits a piece. However, what seems to be missing is the timely hit. My main man, Nomar, has been slow out of the gate. Must be Mia and the babies! No matter, he'll get his hits. It's good to see Jeff Kent swinging a good bat. That will be key. Russell Martin had another outstanding play at the plate. God, how I love this kid! Overall, it is a win and I'll take it!

The Dodgers have the day off and prepare themselves for San Francisco and Barriods on Friday night!

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Dodgers dropped another yesterday to the Brewers, 4-3, for their second straight loss.

What I liked:

First, Russell Martin. He went 3 for 4 with a homerun and had an outstanding play at the plate, tagging out a runner. I love him!

Second, Randy Wolf. Although he gave up the 2 homeruns, I thought he pitched well enough to win. His curve looks nasty. I think he'll do okay!

Third, Jonathan Broxton. This mountain of a kid, came in the the bottom of the 8th and set down the side on strikeouts. Sheer POWER! He looked Gagne-esque!

What I didn't like:

First, Luis Gonzalez' play in the outfield. Two games straight, he's looked pretty shaky. A line drive to left by Estrada went for a double. He came around to score. I don't have anything personal against Gonzalez and he seems like a nice guy, but honestly, it looks as though he's on his last legs. Not good for us. Andre Ethier should be the starting in left field.

Second, the offense looks a little lifeless and apart from Martin, no one is really hitting the ball. New Dodgers, Gonzalez and Pierre are hitless in 15 at bats. MAKE SOME NOISE DAMN IT!

Thrid, the Dodgers don't seem to be playing with any intensity. They're so quiet its kinda eerie! Raffy Furcal needs to hurry his butt back from the DL to breathe a little fire into the team. He's the spark that's missing.

It's early, I'm not worried in the least....just a little frustrated! I hate dropping games in April, they come back to bit you in the ass in September.

The Dodgers new $47 million dollar man, Jason Schmidt, takes the mound today. Let's see if one can be salvaged.

Update, 1:45 PM : What's new? Dodgers got hammered by the Brewers, 7-1. Derek Lowe lost his third straight opening day start. I want a new pitcher in there next year. No more Lowe please. Although, all the blame cannot be placed on Lowe, as the Dodger offense decided to take the afternoon off. Two measly hits against Ben Sheets. Come on boys, he ain't no Oswald or Santana...wake up the hell up!

Let the Nomar LoveFest begin!

New Daddy and Dodger leader was back in the lineup tonight and the difference was like night and day. Nomar went a cool, 3 for 3 as the Dodgers CLOBBERED the Angels, 13-4. The rest of the Dodgers went medieval on Halo asses, knocking the covers off balls for a total of 18 hits on the night.

Betemit, Martin and Kemp all homered (schyeah right, no power indeed). Kemp's shot was a BOMB BLAST that almost landed in my lap in the left field pavilion...well, not really, but hell, he hit it a mile! Juan Pierre went 3 for 3, while successfully stealing a base. Olmedo "the Tomato" Saenz went 2 for 2 and Jason Schmit pitched pretty well for 4 innings, then the rest of the staff came in to finish the job. Everything fell into place. Bottomline, it was sweet revenge for last night's horrific game, which I'm still trying to scrub out of my memory bank. Bleh!

The rubber game is tomorrow night in Anaheim, then the real fun begins on Monday in Milwaukee, where the Dodgers kick off the 2007 season.

In all my years as a baseball fan, I've never witnessed one first hand. NEVER! Not in the Majors, not in High School, not in Little League, not in T-Ball, not anywhere! What am I referring to?

Brady Clark, who was acquired by the Dodgers this week in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewer for Elmer Dessens, had a hell of a first at bat. One he will never forget. One I'll never forget! Clark hit into a....

TRIPLE PLAY

The Dodgers had runners on first and second with no outs and in the blink of an eye, the inning was over. Ouch, that hurt!

So yeah, I know this is a friendly meaningless Spring Training game. I know it doesn't matter or count...but DAMN IT, I hate the fracking Angels and their fans, who invade Chavez Ravine with their silly ass rally monkeys! Ugh!

The game was a lop-sided affair and unfortunately for the Dodgers, they were on the wrong side. Everything that could go wrong, did. First, the Dodgers line-up did everything in its power to make the Angel pitching staff look like aces. Dodger bats were dead silent. It didn't help any that Nomar was given an extra night off, so he could spend time with his newly born daughters. I'll give him a pass on that one. Second, our jackrabbit, Juan Pierre, was thrown out at second in his very first attempt at a stolen base in front of the home crowd. Not the way to win fans over buddy. Third, a punk ass kid, Nick something or other, obviously felt it was necessary to barrel over Dodger catcher, Mike Leiberthal, in a play at the plate.

FINE. I love hard nosed baseball, who doesn't? I just sometimes wish baseball were a contact sport like soccer, where a little payback would be forthcoming. Pitchers sure the hell don't protect their teammates anymore, otherwise, Nicky whatever his name is, takes a fastball to the ribs! But hey, that's just me! Dodgers lose, 6-1.

Finally, the parking mess and prices in general. The McCourts raised parking fees from $10.00 to $15.00. Good thing I didn't roll up in my limousine, otherwise, I'm out $35 bucks. Sheesh! Food prices went up and up and up. I paid $4.50 for a Dodger Dog, $5.50 for a bag of peanuts, $4.50 for a bag of potato chips and $2.50 for a 12 oz cup of coffee. Almost $20 for food. I didn't even check the beer prices...I was afraid to look.

All in all, I had a great time! I love the Dodgers, I love the Stadium, I love it all.

A rookie fresh from the minors is about to change the face of baseball: A female umpire is set to work a major league exhibition game for the first time in almost 20 years.

Ria Cortesio, ready to start the season in Double-A, will be on the bases Thursday for a game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs in Mesa, Ariz.

“I’m looking forward to it,” she said Monday night. “There will be a lot more people in the stands than I’m used to.”

No female umpire has ever worked in the majors during the regular season. Pam Postema was the last female ump to call big league exhibitions, back in 1989 — she was in spring training for two years before getting released.

Cortesio is the only female umpire in professional baseball. At 30, she is starting her ninth year overall and fifth in Double-A.
Slender and athletic, she cut her ponytail a few years ago so she wouldn’t stand out on the field. She also uses a low grunt to call strikes.

“It’s awesome,” Cubs star Derrek Lee said. “I think it’s about time. Female eyes are as good as male eyes. Why can’t they be umpires? Good for her.”

Triple-A and Double-A umpires routinely join major league crews in spring training, especially when extra games fill the schedule.

“I was kind of expecting it,” Cortesio said. “Umpires with my seniority usually get picked.”

Cubs reliever Scott Eyre liked the idea. “She’s doing our game? Oh, cool,” he said. “How do I feel about it? I could care less. If she can call a game, she can call a game.”

“If she rings somebody up for me, I don’t care. You know what I mean? I wouldn’t have a problem with it,” he said.
For several years, she’s been an instructor at the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring.

This year, Cortesio hopes to move to Triple-A — she’s on deck for promotion when the next vacancy occurs. Once umpires reach Triple-A, they are evaluated by major league supervisors, rather than minor league staff.

Life in Double-A isn’t luxurious. Last year, she made about $2,600 a month for the six-month season and her per diem was $25, with her hotel room paid for; big league umps can earn well over $100,000 and get $357 daily to pay for their meals and hotel.

Plus, there’s the travel. Major league umpires jet around the country, a three-person crew in the Southern League drives itself 24,000 miles over a full season.

All that, and no guarantee they’ll ever make the majors because jobs rarely open up. Fact is, a player in Double-A has a much better chance of reaching the big leagues than an umpire.

“I think I’m as excited about that as anything,” she said.

This is great news. Personally, I don't see why there aren't female umpires in the Majors. Baseball is probably the easiest game to officiate. So much so, that I could call a game (and have, many times in my livingroom). The NBA has a female referee, so I think it's time for MLB to turn that corner.

What impresses me about Cortesio is the fact that she is not demanding a position in the Majors. Demanding is what most modern day feminists do. Cortesio is patiently waiting her turn, while working her ass off. Furthermore, she cut hair and did away with her ponytail in order to not draw attention to herself. It's all about the game! I hope Ria makes the Bigs one day. Good luck!

LAKELAND, Fla. — Nomar Garciaparra got a call during dinner Tuesday that his wife, Mia Hamm, was close to giving birth. About six hours later, Garciaparra was at the side of Hamm and their newborn twin daughters in L.A. because he had a private jet on standby at Vero Beach Airport.

Hamm gave birth to healthy twin girls, each weighing more than five pounds, Wednesday morning. They are the couple's first children.

During the flight, Garciaparra was on the phone with the delivery room when the babies were born.

"He was excited and nervous at the same time," said Manager Grady Little, who was dining at the same restaurant as Garciaparra when word came.

Congrats to the happy couple! At one point, Mia Hamm was by far, the best female soccer player in the world. She almost singlehandedly put American soccer on the map. What more could she possibly do? For one, she could marry my favorite baseball player and Dodger, Nomar Garicaparra, and then have babies! Should the twins inherit even an ounce of their parent's genes, I'm certain these girls will SuperBabies!

LOS ANGELES – A man who was cleared of murder when outtakes from the HBO comedy “Curb Your Enthusiasm” put him at Dodger Stadium when the crime occurred will get $320,000 in a settlement with the city.

The Los Angeles City Council agreed Wednesday to settle the police misconduct lawsuit filed by Juan Catalan, who spent nearly five months in jail before footage from the show cemented his alibi.

Catalan, 28, was arrested for the May 2003 slaying of Martha Puebla, 16, outside her Sun Valley home. He told detectives he was innocent and was at a Dodgers game when the crime occurred.

His defense lawyer, Todd Melnik, went through footage of crowd shots from the televised game between the Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves, but did not find his client. Then he learned that the HBO comedy starring former “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David had been shooting at the ballpark that day.

“There he was in the outtakes,” said Gary S. Casselman, the attorney handling Catalan's lawsuit. “He's glad it's over.”

The scene, which ended up on the cutting room floor, showed Catalan with his 6-year-old daughter and two friends. The footage was time coded, confirming that Catalan was at the ballpark shortly before the time of the murder 20 miles away.

Records of a cell phone call, made from Dodger Stadium, between Catalan and his girlfriend also helped persuade a judge to release him.

Someone else is now being prosecuted for the slaying, Casselman said.

Catalan was not a fan of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” before his time in jail.
“He is now,” Casselman said.

Wow! I always believed being a Dodger fan had its benefits, but this is surreal!

Yesterday, the 2007 Dodger Caravan kicked off with many current and former Dodgers along for the ride. Basically, they travel the LA area making stops, greeting and signing autographs for fans! It's a nice gesture on their part and a great chance for fans to meet some of their favorite players.

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend. However, since my entire family are just as fanatical about the Dodgers as I am, I knew someone would come through and make it to one of the stops. Here are some pics from Alamanzor Park in Alhambra.
